THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE

"The Universe is not queerer than we imagine…it is queerer than we imagine"- Haldane
The above-mentioned quotation perhaps best describes the existence of the Bermuda Triangle. It is one of the strange and unexplained phenomenons of the world. The Bermuda Triangle is a vast imaginary triangle drawn on the Atlantic Ocean with Bermuda at one end, Puerto Rico on the other and the US coast of Florida on the third end.

The region has witnessed many unexplained disappearances of aircraft's and ships travelling in its vicinity. As a result this area is also known by a number of other names like the Devil's triangle, the Hoodoo Sea etc.

A number of strange things have happened in this region for a long time. But the first recorded bizarre occurrence in the Bermuda triangle area happened in 1492 AD. The famous explorer, Christopher Columbus witnessed strange incidents, when he was on an expedition to explore the islands of the West Indies. The mariner's compass on one of his ships went haywire, as soon as the vessel entered the area of the Bermuda triangle. Apart from this some of his crewmembers reported seeing mysterious lights in the sky. But there was too little concrete evidence behind calling these events strange. It was later found that the compass aboard the ship was faulty. While the strange lights, seen by the crewmembers, could be attributed to a falling meteorite.

The legend of the Bermuda triangle gained coin after the unexplained disappearance of five aircraft's in 1945. On the fateful day of the 5th of December 1945, five US Navy Avengers (fighter-bombers) took off on a routine training mission from an air base in Florida. Almost all the men flying the aircraft were inexperienced pilots, with the only exception of Lt Charles Taylor. As soon as the ill-fated squadron reached the waters off the coast of Florida, the compass on the aircraft flown by Taylor malfunctioned. As a result Taylor and his trainees lost their way over the Atlantic Ocean. Matters were worsened since the other pilots had little experience flying and were of no assistance to Taylor.

Lt Taylor tried his best to find a way out by looking at the landmarks below, being quiet familiar with the small islands off the coast of Florida. However, he even failed to do this because the sun had set and the light was fast deteriorating. In spite of his perilous state and the brewing storm, the aircraft somehow managed to maintain radio contact with the Lauderdale air base, in Florida. The last straw was drawn when Lt Taylor gave orders to move in a western direction instead of going eastward towards the US coastline. This would eventually take them further into the Atlantic Ocean.

After the loss of radio contact with these aircraft's, the US Navy dispatched a Martin Mariner aircraft in search of the missing Avengers. However, this aircraft could not even commence the search mission as it blew up just as it took off from the air base. The remains of the five Avengers have never been recovered. The most probable reason for not having recovered the wreckage of the aircraft's can be attributed to the deep ocean floor. It is virtually impossible to find aircraft remains from these depths.

As the remains of the disappeared aircraft's could not be found, a number of theories began to emerge, trying to explain the entire episode. The most popularly held belief was that the Bermuda Triangle region, as it came to be known, with its powerful magnetic fields, swallowed the aircraft's into the dark depths of the ocean. However there were other even stranger explanations. Some people believed that the ill-fated crew were intercepted and abducted by the Martians or aliens. They also believed that these abductors actually lived in the Bermuda triangle.

According to yet another account, the Bermuda triangle is nothing but a part of the mythical kingdom of Atlantis, which had sunk into the Atlantic Ocean. According to ancient Greek Legend, Atlantis was an immensely prosperous and powerful kingdom. It had a number of scientific achievements to its name, which included the creation of 'fire-crystals'. These crystals had a powerful mechanism, which derived its power directly from the cosmos (universe) and in turn send powerful rays into the outer space. The scientists of Atlantis are believed to have used the power generated by these crystals in various ways to maintain the prosperity and material wealth of their kingdom.

It is said that when the mythical kingdom of Atlantis sank, it took along with it the fire-crystals. It is believed that these crystals would have been damaged when they hit the ocean floor. The explanation further elaborates that these partially damaged fire-crystals now emit powerful rays. And that these rays are responsible for the vanishing of aircraft's and ships without a trace.

Since the Avengers incident of 1945, more than 200 aircraft and ships have been lost over this area. This incident not only christened the place as the Bermuda Triangle, but also made it into a modern day legend. The media has also played a major role in mounting the hype associated with the strange occurrences of the Bermuda triangle. Many books, articles and features have been written and published on this strange phenomenon after the Avengers accident.

Though, many strange incidents have taken place in and around the area demarcated as the Bermuda triangle, they have little scientific standing. There is also evidence that a large number of these disasters had nothing to do with the mysterious powers of the Bermuda triangle. Rather, they were caused by errors, which can be easily explained. Also, a number of these unexplained disappearances actually happened away from the physical boundaries of the Bermuda triangle. In spite of this, some people wrongfully attribute them to the Bermuda triangle, distorting facts and hiding reality behind fiction.
