The Prithvi (Earth) is a Short-Range Ballistic Missile (SRBM). It can shatter targets within a small range of 300 km to 350 km. Interestingly, the Prithvi missile can be launched from both land based launchers and fighter aircraft. As compared to other missiles in its category, the Prithvi can carry the heaviest warhead. The missile can carry a variety of warheads such as bomblets, sub-ammunitions, cluster ammunitions, re-fragmented explosives, fuel-air explosives and high explosives.
The unique guidance system makes it almost impossible to intercept. The Prithvi can perform six different trajectories, making the interception all the more difficult. The radar absorbing paint makes the Prithvi almost invisible to the best of the radar systems.
India has deployed the Prithvi missiles near Jalandhar in northern Punjab, as tactical battlefield missiles against Pakistan. The Indian scientists are currently working on the development of a 350 km naval variant of the Prithvi. The Indian press has referred to the naval variant as the Dhanush (Bow).
