The Polaris missile programme was started by the US in 1955. It was believed to be a befitting reply to the Soviet Union's first SLBM, the SS-N-4-Sark. The first Polaris missile (Polaris A1) was successfully tested on a nuclear powered submarine, the USS George Washington in 1959. US scientists developed two more versions of the Polaris: the A2 and the A3. In 1960, the US Navy started deploying 16 Polaris missiles each on their nuclear-powered submarines.
The Polaris missiles can splash out of the sea and penetrate almost 2,700 km to 4,500 km into the enemy territory. Studded with a half-megaton conventional or nuclear warhead, they are capable of creating havoc once they enter the enemy domain.
