The 214mm Pinaka multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS) has been developed by the Indian Army to serve as a frontline artillery system. The development of this rocket system began in 1981. The Pinaka underwent a number of tests spread over many years. It has now become a part of the Indian Army. The first Pinaka regiment was raised in February 2000. Further development of this versatile MRLS is still going on and better versions are expected in the future.
The Pinaka MRLS is mounted on a truck. The Pinaka system consists of rocket launcher vehicle, a command post vehicle and a loader cum replenishment vehicle with a battery of six launchers. The functionality of this rocket system is based on the principle of shoot-and-scoot. The Pinaka is capable of firing as many as 12 rockets in the short span of 40 seconds. Once these rockets are fired and are airborne, the truck carrying this system leaves the place from where it had fired the rockets. As this system is mobile, the enemy artillery cannot locate it. Thus, Pinaka can easily get away from the range of enemy guns after firing its deadly cargo of rockets.
The Pinaka can unleash as much as 2,645 lb (1200 kg) of explosives on the enemy within a minute. It has the capacity to rain down small anti-tank, and anti-personnel bombs or mines on targets located as far as 25 miles (40 km) away. The Pinaka MRLS was used in the Kargil War in 1999 by the Indian artillery against the Pakistani troops hiding on the high peaks.
