The Canadian based Diesel Division of the General Motors Company (DDGM) has developed the LAV-25. The main purpose of this vehicle is to carry troops and provide ground support to the advancing military units. The LAV-25 is a popular vehicle and several countries throughout the world are using its services because of its unique amphibious capabilities.
Capable of negotiating through rough terrain, the LAV-25 has an eight - wheel drive (8x8), and can easily move over enemy trenches and dugouts. It is capable of attaining a top speed of 62 miles/h (100 km/h) on land. Compared to tracked vehicles of the same class, the LAV-25 is more reliable and requires less maintenance. While traversing water obstacles like rivers, lakes, streams and ditches, it can attain a top speed of 6.21 miles/h (10 km/h). When in water, the LAV-25 is powered by two propellers and guided by two rudders.
The LAV-25 is ideally suited for rapid transportation of troops from one place to another in battle situation. The troops carried in the LAV-25 are protected by steel armour, which can withstand hits from small firearms, mines and explosive bursts. Some LAV-25s are also used as surveillance vehicles and control posts, while others are used as ambulances and recovery vehicles.
